Imagine gliding silently in a boat along an underground river, surrounded by stalactites and stalagmites lit up in the half-darkness, dozens of metres below the earth's surface. That is the unique experience offered by the Labouiche underground river, near Foix, in Ariège. Classified as a natural monument, it is the longest navigable underground river in Europe open to the public.
A 1.5 km underground adventure by boat
The visit to Labouiche is conducted entirely by boat, guided by experienced boatmen who propel you along 1.5 km of navigable galleries. The tour lasts approximately 1 hour 15 minutes and passes through a succession of chambers and corridors carved by the Arget river over millennia. The underground temperature is a constant 13°C: bring a jumper or cardigan, even in the middle of summer.
The galleries are artistically lit to highlight the geological formations: hanging stalactites, rising stalagmites, columns, limestone draperies, crystal-clear water pools... The silence is broken only by the splash of the oar and the guide's passionate explanations about the geology, underground fauna and the history of the site's discovery in 1897.
Labouiche is an ideal visit on rainy days or in intense heat, thanks to the constant 13°C temperature underground. Bring a warm layer and closed-toe shoes.
A visit suited to the whole family
The Labouiche visit is accessible from age 4 and fascinates children and adults alike. The adventurous nature of the underground boat ride particularly appeals to young visitors, who experience it as a real expedition. The guides tailor their explanations to the audience and know how to captivate the youngest visitors with anecdotes about bats, blind fish and the mysteries of the subterranean world.
The history of Labouiche
The underground river was discovered in 1897 by Doctor Dunac. The first explorations revealed a considerable subterranean hydrographic network, carved in limestone by the Arget river. The site was opened to the public in the following years and has been continuously explored since. Speleologists have mapped several kilometres of galleries, of which only 1.5 km are accessible to the public by boat.
