When people think of skiing in Ariège, they often picture the downhill slopes of les Monts d'Olmes or Guzet. Yet the department has two of the finest Nordic resorts in the Pyrénées: le Chioula and the Beille plateau. These high-altitude open areas offer quality cross-country skiing in magnificent scenery, well away from the crowds of the large Alpine resorts.
Le Chioula: Nordic skiing and exceptional panoramas
The Chioula Nordic resort, located on the col de Chioula at around 1,500 metres altitude, is renowned for the quality of its trails and the beauty of its landscapes. The resort offers cross-country skiing trails for all levels, from beginners to experienced skiers, in both skating and classic technique.
What sets Chioula apart is its panorama: the trails wind through fir forests and high-altitude clearings, offering spectacular views over the Pyrenean chain and the Ariège valleys. Snow cover is generally good from December to March, supplemented by careful trail grooming.
- Cross-country ski trails for all levels, classic and skating
- Marked snowshoe routes through forest and upland pastures
- Dog sledding: professional mushers offer introductory rides and longer outings
- Sledging area for children
- Equipment hire on site
The Beille plateau: the largest Nordic resort in the Pyrénées
The Beille plateau, reaching around 2,000 metres altitude, is the largest cross-country skiing domain in the Pyrénées. This high-altitude plateau, snow-covered for a good part of winter, offers cross-country ski trails amid breathtaking high-mountain scenery. The site is also famous for having hosted several Tour de France cycling stage finishes in summer.
The Beille plateau is particularly well suited to families and beginners thanks to its wide trails and gentle gradients. More experienced skiers will also find more technical routes with greater elevation changes. The altitude ensures reliable snow cover and quality snow.
Dog sledding: a unique experience
One of the highlights of the Ariège winter is a dog sled ride. Professional mushers based in the Ariège Pyrénées offer guided outings ranging from a 20-minute introductory ride to multi-hour excursions. The experience is magical: gliding silently through snow-covered forest, pulled by a team of enthusiastic huskies, is something you will never forget.
Snowshoeing: exploring the mountain another way
For those who prefer walking, snowshoeing offers an accessible and contemplative way to discover the winter mountain. The Chioula and Beille resorts provide marked routes, but you can also head out on free-roaming or guided treks into the backcountry. Winter wildlife — deer, isard chamois or fox tracks in the snow — adds a naturalist dimension to the outing.
