Foix is one of those towns that does not reveal all its secrets at first glance. Behind the administrative prefecture of Ariège (15,000 inhabitants) and its roundabouts lies a medieval city of exceptional richness. Its triple-towered castle, perched on a rocky promontory at the confluence of the Ariège and Arget rivers, is one of the most impressive in South-West France. And from Domaine de la Trille in Sainte-Foi, Foix is just approximately 30 minutes by road.
The Château des Comtes de Foix: history and visit
The Château de Foix is one of the best-preserved historic monuments of medieval Occitania. Built on a limestone rock commanding the confluence of the Ariège and Arget rivers, it comprises three distinctive towers: the round tower (12th century), the square tower (11th century) and the prismatic tower (14th century). It served as the residence and symbol of power of the Counts of Foix, one of the most influential dynasties in southern France between the 10th and 15th centuries.
The castle visit includes the Ariège departmental museum, installed in the renovated rooms. The collections present the history of Ariège from prehistory to the Middle Ages: weapons, armour, reconstructions of medieval life, archaeological finds. Multimedia displays and children's workshops make the visit interactive. From the top of the towers, the panoramic view over Foix, the Ariège mountains and, on clear days, the first Pyrenean foothills is worth the trip in itself.

The old town of Foix: a medieval walk
Beyond the castle, the old town of Foix is worth an hour's stroll. From the foot of the castle, head up the Rue des Marchands towards the Cathédrale Saint-Volusien, whose brick bell tower and sculpted portal are representative of late Romanesque art in Ariège. Continue to the Quartier des Forgerons and the Rue de la Faurie to discover half-timbered facades and partially preserved medieval houses. The Friday morning market on the Cours Gabriel Fauré is very lively.
What else to do around Foix
Foix is well placed for exploring the entire Ariège valley. 10 minutes north by car, the Underground River of Labouiche (approximately 40 min from the Domaine) is unmissable. 20 minutes to the south, the communes of Tarascon-sur-Ariège and Bédeilhac concentrate three major sites: the Parc de la Préhistoire, the Grotte de Bédeilhac and the Grotte de Niaux (25 min from Foix). To the east, roads climb towards Montségur (30 min from Foix).
Where to eat in Foix?
Foix offers a varied dining scene for a town of its size. The area around the castle and the Rue des Marchands concentrates most of the restaurants: Ariège terroir cuisine (cassoulet, garbure, Pyrenean goat's cheese, Porc Noir de Bigorre), contemporary bistros and pizzerias. For a typical meal, look for restaurants featuring Porc Noir de Bigorre or Fromage de l'Ariège on their menus — signs of local, traceable cooking. The Friday market is the best time to buy charcuterie, cheese and preserves to take home.
Parking in Foix: free car parks are available on the outskirts of the town centre. The car park at the foot of the castle is paid in season. Check on site for current parking rates.
