Ariège is known for its mountain hikes, but the department also offers many easy walks accessible to everyone: families with young children, people who rarely walk, or simply anyone who fancies a quiet stroll. Here is our selection around Mirepoix and in the Pyrenean foothills.
1. Circuit around Lac de Montbel
Distance: about 12 km (can be done in sections). Elevation gain: virtually none. The trail circles Lac de Montbel along a wide, flat path that is mostly shaded. It is the most popular walk in the area. Picnic areas are dotted along the route. In summer, combine it with a swim on the supervised beach. 20 minutes from Domaine de la Trille.
2. Banks of the Hers river at Mirepoix
Distance: 3 to 5 km depending on the route. Elevation gain: flat. A walk along the Hers river on the outskirts of Mirepoix. The path is flat and pushchair-accessible for most of its length. Combine it with a visit to the medieval bastide. 5 minutes from the Domaine.
3. Trail around Camon, the village of roses
Distance: 2 to 4 km. Elevation gain: minimal. Camon is listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France. A waymarked trail circles the fortified village and offers views over the Hers valley. The walk is short and suitable for all levels. 20 minutes from the Domaine.
4. Bélesta Forest
Distance: several loops of 3 to 8 km. Elevation gain: gentle. Bélesta Forest offers shaded trails through oaks and beeches. It makes a pleasant walk in summer when it is hot on the plain. 25 minutes from the Domaine.
5. Trail of the capitelles (Vals)
Distance: about 4 km. Elevation gain: gentle. This trail passes through the rock-hewn church of Vals (built into the rock, a remarkable site) and by capitelles — the small dry-stone huts typical of the south. 20 minutes from the Domaine.
6. Path to Roquefixade
Distance: about 3 km return. Elevation gain: about 150 m. This is the most demanding walk in this selection, but it remains short. The trail climbs to the ruins of the Cathar castle of Roquefixade and offers a panoramic view of the Pyrenees. Not suitable for pushchairs. 25 minutes from the Domaine.
7. Walk on Domaine de la Trille
Distance: variable (the farm's 240 hectares are open to explore). Elevation gain: gentle. No need to take the car: the Domaine itself offers walking paths through meadows and woodland. You will encounter Florence and Benoît's Limousin cattle along the way.
8. Mirepoix canal trail
Distance: about 5 km. Elevation gain: flat. A former irrigation canal converted into a walking path. The route is flat and shaded, pushchair-accessible. Starts from Mirepoix.
9. Circuit around Lac de Filheit (Montségur)
Distance: about 3 km. Elevation gain: minimal. A small, peaceful lake at the foot of Château de Montségur. The loop around the lake is short and easy. You can combine it with the climb to the castle (30 min, more strenuous). 30 minutes from the Domaine.
10. Banks of the Ariège river at Tarascon
Distance: about 4 km. Elevation gain: flat. A stroll along the Ariège river at Tarascon-sur-Ariège. The path is well-maintained and accessible. You can follow it up with a visit to the Parc de la Préhistoire or the Niaux cave, both nearby. 40 minutes from the Domaine.
Tip: always bring water and sunscreen, even for short walks. In summer, set out early in the morning or at the end of the day to avoid the hottest hours.
