Ariège is a true playground for families. Nestled between the Pyrénées and the foothills of the Montagne Noire, this destination — still off the mass-tourism radar — offers an incredible variety of activities for all ages. Here is our selection of must-dos, tried and tested by families staying at Domaine de la Trille.
Caves and prehistoric sites: a journey through time
Grotte de Niaux: the most accessible cave paintings in France
About 45 minutes from the Domaine, the Grotte de Niaux is a major rock art site. You descend 800 metres underground to discover paintings of bison, horses and ibex dating back 14,000 years. The guided tour lasts around 1h30 and is suitable from age 6. Booking ahead is essential — places are limited to protect the paintings. Check times and prices on the official website.
Underground river at Labouiche
The longest navigable underground river in Europe! A 1h30 boat ride through spectacular underground galleries, lit to reveal stalactites and stalagmites. Children love this underground adventure. 40 minutes from the Domaine.
Parc de la Préhistoire de Tarascon-sur-Ariège
A theme park entirely dedicated to Prehistory: spear-thrower workshops, cave painting, flint knapping, archaeological digs... Children participate actively and learn by doing. Allow half a day. 40 minutes from the Domaine.
