What to do in Ariège this weekend? The events agenda

8 min read

Looking for an event, a village fête or something to do in Ariège this weekend? Good news: in this rural department there is always something going on — a producers' market on Saturday morning, a village fête with a communal meal and dance in the evening, a lotto under the market hall, a festival in summer. This page gathers the reliable events, the weekly markets and the best sources to find the exact programme for the coming weekend.

Agenda updated every month. Last update: July 2026. For the day-by-day detail, also check the tourist office agendas listed below.

The summer 2026 agenda: the big events of July and August

  • Mirepoix Medieval Days (3rd weekend of July): four days of festivities around the bastide — craft market, encampments, concerts and a grand historical parade under the arcades. One of the finest events of the summer, 5 minutes from Domaine de la Trille.
  • “Mille et Une Mains” night markets in Mirepoix: Wednesdays 22 July and 19 August 2026, from 6pm to 10:30pm under the market hall — more than 40 artisans and producers, 100% from Ariège, food trucks and refreshments.
  • Autrefois le Couserans in Saint-Girons (early August): the town dives back into the 1900s — costumed parade, old trades, Mérens horses, dances and country market. Monumental.
  • Village fêtes: almost every village has its own between June and September — country meal, pétanque tournament, dance and sometimes fireworks. Watch for the posters at village entrances.
  • Night markets and producers' dinners all over the area (Pyrénées Cathares, Lèze valley, Couserans): almost every week in July-August.

In early July, Foix lives to the rhythm of the Résistances festival (committed cinema, more than 100 films and debates — the 30th edition took place from 3 to 11 July 2026). If you are staying in Ariège in the first half of July, it is a must to note for next year.

The weekly markets: the guaranteed weekend outing

In Ariège, the market is much more than a place to shop: it is THE social event of the week. The days to remember:

  • Monday morning: Mirepoix, under the medieval arcades of the square — one of the most beautiful markets in Occitanie (plus a small producers' market on Thursday).
  • Tuesday and Friday morning: Foix, under the grain hall and in the streets of the historic centre.
  • Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday: Pamiers, the big market of lower Ariège.
  • Saturday morning: Saint-Girons, the legendary Couserans market — mountain producers, cheeses, charcuterie, atmosphere guaranteed.
  • Wednesday and Friday: Lavelanet, at the foot of the Cathar Pyrenees.
  • In season: an almost daily market in Ax-les-Thermes, Place Roussel.

Village fêtes and lottos: how to find this weekend's programme

Village fêtes and lottos are almost never listed on the big national websites: everything happens locally. Our reliable sources to know what is on this particular weekend:

  • The events section of La Dépêche du Midi, Ariège edition: the most complete for local fêtes, flea markets and lottos.
  • The tourist office agendas: Pyrénées Cathares (Mirepoix-Lavelanet), Foix-Ariège-Pyrénées, Couserans, Ax valleys.
  • Radio Transparence (93.7 FM in Foix) and the local radio stations, which run through the weekend's events.
  • The notice boards at village entrances and in local shops: the quintessential Ariège method.
  • The Facebook pages of the village festival committees, very active from June to September.

The big annual events, month by month

  • May-June: transhumance (herds moving up to summer pastures) in the Couserans and upper Ariège, nature festivals.
  • Early July: Résistances festival in Foix (cinema and debates).
  • Mid-July: Mirepoix Medieval Days.
  • July-August: night markets, village fêtes every weekend, medieval shows at the castle of Foix.
  • Early August: Autrefois le Couserans in Saint-Girons.
  • September: agricultural fairs and transhumance festivals (herds coming down).
  • December: Mirepoix Christmas market under the arcades and end-of-year events.

This weekend with children

Safe bets in any season: the Prehistory Park in Tarascon-sur-Ariège, the castle of Foix and its activities (siege machines, shows in summer), the caves (a constant 13°C, ideal in a heatwave as in the rain), the bison reserve or an easy walk around Lake Montbel. The Monday market in Mirepoix, with a hot chocolate under the arcades, is also a family outing that never fails.

And if it rains this weekend?

Ariège is the dream department for plan Bs: the caves of Niaux, Lombrives and Mas-d'Azil, the underground river of Labouiche, museums, the thermal baths of Ax-les-Thermes... We have devoted a complete guide to rainy-day activities — see the links below.
