When searching for a gîte in the south of France, results typically point to Provence, the Dordogne or the Côte d'Azur. These regions have their strengths, but they share a major drawback: in summer, they are packed and prices soar. There is an alternative that British and Northern European travellers are starting to discover: Ariège, at the foot of the Pyrenees.
Why Ariège over Provence or the Dordogne?
Ariège is the least densely populated département in Occitanie. The result: no queues at tourist sites, no traffic jams in July, and accommodation prices 30 to 50% lower than Provence for equivalent quality. The natural setting is spectacular — mountains, lush valleys, mountain lakes — without the overcrowding of the Alps.
What makes a great gîte in the Pyrenees
A good Pyrenean gîte is not just a holiday rental apartment. It is accommodation with character: stone, timber, mountain views. It should offer independence (equipped kitchen, private space) while giving immediate access to the natural surroundings. At Domaine de la Trille, the Les Iris (60 m²) and Les Roses (57 m²) gîtes meet these criteria: traditional build, private terrace with Pyrenean views, and 240 hectares of farmland to explore on foot.
The advantage of a farm gîte
Staying in a gîte on a working farm adds an extra dimension to your holiday. At Domaine de la Trille, an HVE-certified farm (France's highest environmental certification for agriculture), you see cattle grazing in the fields, buy farm produce on site, and your children discover rural life effortlessly. It is an experience that neither a city Airbnb nor a hotel can offer.
The Les Iris and Les Roses gîtes are available for booking all year round. Check availability and prices on our booking page.
