Ariège is an outstanding destination for campervan travellers. Winding roads through oak forests, vertiginous mountain passes, medieval villages, prehistoric and thermal sites: the department offers a diversity of landscapes and activities that lends itself perfectly to the freedom of campervan travel. The roads are generally wide and well maintained up to a certain altitude, service areas are multiplying and the welcome extended by locals is legendary. Here is everything you need to know to plan your road trip.
Itinerary 1: The Cathar Castles Loop (3–4 days)
This circuit, starting from Pamiers or Foix, passes through the key sites of Cathar Country. Day 1 — Foix: visit the medieval castle, stroll through the old town, overnight at Foix service area (check conditions on site). Day 2 — Montségur: climb to the pog (campervan-accessible car park), overnight at the village service area or return to Lavelanet. Day 3 — Roquefixade and the Ariège valley: visit the free-access ruins, descend towards Mirepoix for its medieval market. Day 4 — Puivert and lac de Puivert: well-preserved castle, walk around the lake.
Itinerary tip: on Monday morning, plan your stop in Mirepoix so you don't miss the large weekly market. Local producers, cheeses, charcuterie and craftspeople fill the beautiful medieval square.
Itinerary 2: The Caves and Prehistory Route (2–3 days)
Ariège concentrates an exceptional number of prehistoric sites. From Mirepoix, head up the Ariège valley towards Tarascon-sur-Ariège. Day 1 — Mas-d'Azil: the Grotte du Mas-d'Azil is traversed by a departmental road — a unique spectacle. Prehistory Museum in the village. Parking area in the village. Day 2 — Foix and Rivière souterraine de Labouiche: the longest navigable underground river in Europe (boat trip). Day 3 — Tarascon-sur-Ariège: Parc de la Préhistoire (flint-knapping workshops, cave painting), Grotte de Niaux (14,000 years of paintings, booking required), Grotte de Bédeilhac. Campervan area available at Tarascon (check conditions on site).
Itinerary 3: The Ariège Pyrenees and Thermal Spas (4–5 days)
For mountain lovers, this circuit heads up towards the summits. Ax-les-Thermes: Ariège's quintessential thermal town. It has public thermal pools (check access conditions and opening times on site). Auzat and Vicdessos: gateway to the Trois Seigneurs massif, hikes to the Bassiès mountain lakes. Col de Pailhères (2,001 m): accessible in summer, spectacular panorama over the Pyrenees. Luzenac: former talc mine turned into an industrial curiosity. Head up to Monts d'Olmes for mountain biking.
Mountain caution: some Ariège passes (Pailhères, Port de Lers, Col de Chioula) may be closed in winter (November to May). Check conditions on the Ariège prefecture website before departure. Winding roads can be tricky for large campervans (over 7 m).
