Ariège is the historical heartland of Catharism. Between the 12th and 13th centuries, this region was the setting for one of the most dramatic chapters in French history: the Albigensian Crusade. The hilltop castles dotting the Ariège ridgelines bear witness to that era. Here is a circuit of 8 major sites, achievable in 3 to 4 days from Domaine de la Trille.
1. Montségur — the Cathar symbol
30 minutes from Domaine de la Trille. The most famous of the Cathar castles, perched at 1,207 m altitude. It was here in 1244, after a 10-month siege, that 225 Cathars refused to recant and were burned at the foot of the castle. The climb takes 30 minutes. The village museum traces the history of the siege. The most visited site in Ariège — come early in the morning in summer. Admission: €6.50 adults.
2. Roquefixade — the citadel of the sky
25 minutes from the Domaine. Perched on a limestone cliff at 919 m altitude, Roquefixade offers one of the finest views of the Ariège Pyrenees. The ruins are freely accessible (free). The climb from the village takes 15 minutes. Less well known than Montségur, the site is often deserted — ideal for a contemplative visit. In 1272, the castle was the last Cathar bastion in Ariège to fall.
3. Château de Foix — the fortress of the Counts
35 minutes from the Domaine. Château de Foix is not strictly speaking a Cathar castle, but it played a key role in the history of the Crusade. Its three towers dominating the town are the symbol of Ariège. The departmental museum is outstanding, with collections spanning prehistory to the Middle Ages. Allow 2 hours for the visit. Admission: €12 adults (museum and castle).
4. Puivert — the troubadours' castle
20 minutes from the Domaine. Puivert is the best-preserved Cathar castle in the area. Its square keep and curtain walls are almost intact. The musicians' hall, with its troubadour sculptures, is unique in France. The castle overlooks Lac de Puivert, perfect for a swim after the visit. Admission: €6 adults.
5. Puilaurens — the eagle of Fenouillèdes
50 minutes from the Domaine (Aude). Puilaurens is one of the five "sons of Carcassonne", the royal castles that guarded the border with Aragon. Its crenellated enclosure is remarkably well preserved. Access is via a steep path (20 min). The views of the Corbières and the Pyrenees are spectacular.
6. Quéribus — the last Cathar citadel
1h10 from the Domaine (Aude). Quéribus was the very last Cathar bastion to fall, in 1255, eleven years after Montségur. Perched at 728 m on a vertiginous rocky pinnacle, it offers a 360° panorama stretching from the Mediterranean to the Pyrenees. The Gothic pillar hall, carved out of the rock, is breathtaking.
7. Château d'Usson — the eagle's nest of the Donezan
1 hour from the Domaine. Less well known but equally impressive, Château d'Usson dominates the village of Rouze in the Donezan, the most remote part of Ariège. The site is being restored by a group of enthusiasts. Access is free and the drive through this secret corner of Ariège is well worth the detour.
8. Miglos — the sentinel of the Vicdessos valley
45 minutes from the Domaine. Château de Miglos has watched over the entrance to the Vicdessos valley since the 11th century. Its ruins are freely accessible via a short path from the village. The site sees few visitors and offers a splendid view of the valley and surrounding mountains. Combine with a visit to the Niaux cave, 15 minutes away.
All distances are calculated from Domaine de la Trille (Sainte-Foi, 09500). The first 4 castles are accessible in a single day. Add 1 to 2 days for the more distant sites in Aude.
