The Cathar castles are among the most spectacular historical sites in the south of France. Perched on rocky peaks, they bear witness to the 13th-century Albigensian Crusade. From Toulouse, a 3-day road trip takes in the most remarkable ones, crossing Ariège and Aude.
Day 1: Toulouse – Roquefixade – Montségur
Leave Toulouse in the morning via the A66 towards Foix (1h). First stop: Roquefixade (25 min from Foix). The ruined castle rewards a short 15-minute climb with striking views of the Pyrenean chain. Lunch in Lavelanet or a village en route. In the afternoon, head for Montségur (20 min from Lavelanet). The climb to the castle takes 30 to 45 minutes — bring good footwear. The site is deeply moving: 225 Cathars were burned here in 1244.
Check in at Domaine de la Trille in Sainte-Foi (30 min from Montségur), an ideal base for the following days. Spend the evening in peace on the 240-hectare estate.
Day 2: Puivert – Quéribus – Peyrepertuse
Set off for Puivert (20 min from Domaine de la Trille). The castle is one of the best preserved in the Cathar series, with an intact keep and a museum of medieval life. Lac de Puivert below is perfect for a break. Continue south into Aude. Quéribus (1h30 from Puivert) was the last Cathar stronghold to fall in 1255 — the 360° view from the summit is unforgettable. Just 10 km away, Peyrepertuse is the largest of the Cathar castles: a true citadel in the sky.
Day 3: Château de Foix and return
Before heading back to Toulouse, stop at the Château de Foix (30 min from the Domaine). It is not strictly a Cathar castle, but it is linked to that history. The interactive museum inside is excellent and requires no physical effort. If time allows, detour via the Mirepoix market (5 min from the Domaine, Monday mornings) to stock up on local produce.
Domaine de la Trille is ideally located in the heart of Cathar country. Book your gîte or wagon as a base for exploring the castles.
