Ariège is best discovered over the course of a week. That is the time needed to appreciate the diversity of this Pyrenean department without rushing: medieval heritage, wild nature, local gastronomy and outdoor activities. Here is a day-by-day itinerary, tested and optimised from Domaine de la Trille, located in Sainte-Foi near Mirepoix — a central base from which to explore all of Ariège.
Day 1: Mirepoix and settling in
Arrive in the afternoon and settle into your accommodation. Make the most of the end of the day to stroll through the streets of Mirepoix, one of the finest bastides in southern France. Admire the Place des Couverts with its 13th-century half-timbered houses, the Cathédrale Saint-Maurice (the widest single-span nave in France) and the artisan shops. If you arrive on a Monday, you will have the chance to discover the weekly market, one of the most renowned in Occitania.
Domaine de la Trille is just 5 minutes by car from Mirepoix. The caravans and cottages provide an ideal base for this week-long itinerary.
Day 2: Montségur and Cathar Country
Head for Château de Montségur, a key site in Cathar history. The climb to the summit (30 minutes' walk) offers a 360° view of the Pyrenees. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the full visit, museum included. In the afternoon, continue to Roquefixade (20 min by road) for a second Cathar castle with a spectacular view, or head down into the Gorges de la Frau for a refreshing walk.
Day 3: Foix and Niaux cave
In the morning, visit the Château des Comtes de Foix which dominates the town. The departmental museum traces the history of Ariège from prehistory onwards. In the afternoon, book a guided tour of the Niaux cave (booking essential), one of the rare sites in the world where you can see authentic 14,000-year-old cave paintings in their natural setting.
Day 4: Lakes and swimming
A relaxing day at Lac de Montbel (20 min from the Domaine), the largest lake in Ariège. Supervised swimming in summer, water activities (paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing) and a walking trail around the lake (15 km). Alternative option: Lac de Mondély or the wild rivers of the upper Ariège valley for a swim in the heart of nature.
Day 5: Caves and the underground world
Ariège is a paradise for cave enthusiasts. In the morning, visit the Underground River of Labouiche (the longest in Europe open to the public, a 1.5 km boat journey). In the afternoon, discover the Mas d'Azil, a cave with a national road running through it — a unique site in the world. Both are 30–40 minutes from the Domaine.
Day 6: Mountain hiking
Head for the Ariège Pyrenees for a day of hiking. Several options depending on your fitness level: the Étangs de Bassies trail (difficult, 6h, stunning landscapes), the tour of Mont Ceint from the Plateau de Beille (moderate, 4h), or the Cascade d'Ars from Aulus-les-Bains (easy to moderate, 3h, one of the highest waterfalls in the Pyrenees). Pack a picnic with local produce bought at the market.
Day 7: Markets, local produce and relaxation
For the last day, settle into the Ariège rhythm. Start with a farmers' market (Mirepoix on Monday, Foix on Friday, Saint-Girons on Saturday). Buy cheeses, honey, jams and cured meats to take home. In the afternoon, enjoy the peace of the Domaine: a walk through the farm's 240 hectares, watching the animals, reading on the terrace with a view of the Pyrenees. One last sunset over the mountains before departure.
This itinerary is adaptable depending on the season and weather. In winter, replace the swimming day with a skiing session at Monts d'Olmes (30 min) or cross-country skiing at Beille / Chioula.
