One Week in Ariège: Day-by-Day Itinerary to See It All

10 min read

A week in Ariège lets you see the highlights without rushing. From Domaine de la Trille in Sainte-Foi (5 minutes from Mirepoix), every site is reachable in under an hour. Here is a day-by-day itinerary, adaptable depending on the weather and your mood.

Day 1 (Saturday): arrival and Mirepoix

Arrive in the late afternoon (check-in from 4 pm). Settle into your wagon or gîte. Take a stroll around the estate to find your bearings. In the evening, dinner in Mirepoix (5 minutes away): several restaurants on the medieval square. If you arrive on a Saturday there is a small market in the morning.

Day 2 (Sunday): Montségur and Roquefixade

Morning: set off for Montségur (30 minutes by road). Climb up to the Cathar castle (about 30 minutes' walk on a steep path). Visiting the site and the village museum takes roughly 2 hours in total. Lunch in the village. Afternoon: stop at Roquefixade (25 minutes from Montségur) — a shorter climb to the ruins and an open view over the Pyrenees. Back to the Domaine in the late afternoon.

Day 3 (Monday): Mirepoix market and Lac de Montbel

Morning: the big Mirepoix market is held on Mondays. Go early (before 9:30 am). Cheeses, charcuterie, fruit, vegetables, honey, crafts. Stock up for the week. Afternoon: head to Lac de Montbel (20 minutes). Walk around the lake (all or part of the 12 km circuit), and swim in summer (supervised beach).

Day 4 (Tuesday): caves

A day dedicated to caves. Morning: Niaux cave (45 minutes from the Domaine) — book in advance, places are limited. A guided tour of about 1h30 to see the cave paintings of the Salon Noir. Afternoon: Parc de la Préhistoire in Tarascon-sur-Ariège (10 minutes from Niaux) — workshops and museum, allow 2–3 hours. Alternative: the underground river at Labouiche (40 minutes from the Domaine).

Tip: book Niaux cave as soon as you know your dates, especially in summer. Visitor numbers are strictly limited to protect the paintings.

Day 5 (Wednesday): Foix

A day in Foix (30 minutes). The comtal castle with its interactive museum easily fills 2 hours. Wander through the old town, lunch on site. In the afternoon you can visit the Bédeilhac cave (20 minutes from Foix) or return to the Domaine for a restful afternoon — mid-stay, that does you good.

Day 6 (Thursday): your choice

Depending on your interests and the weather:

  • Nature option: hike in the Pyrenees (Chioula trail, about 1 hour's drive)
  • Heritage option: villages of Camon (20 min) and Vals (20 min), rock-cut church
  • Excursion option: Carcassonne (about 1 hour) — the medieval city, the Canal du Midi
  • Relaxation option: quiet day at the Domaine and swimming at Lac de Montbel
  • Spa option: Ax-les-Thermes (about 1h10) — the Bassin des Ladres, free of charge

Day 7 (Friday): last morning

Check-out at 10 am. If the weather allows, one last walk around the estate or a coffee on a terrace in Mirepoix before heading home.
