Ecotourism is not just a trend: it is a necessity. In the face of overtourism in some destinations and the climate emergency, more and more travellers are looking to combine the pleasure of discovery with respect for the environment. Ariège, by its very nature — sparsely populated, little industrialised, rich in remarkable biodiversity — is an ecotourism destination par excellence.
Ariège: a naturally preserved territory
With around 150,000 inhabitants spread across more than 4,800 km², Ariège is one of the least populated departments in France. This low population pressure has allowed ecosystems of exceptional richness to be preserved. The Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises, which covers a large part of the Ariège mountains, protects diverse habitats: ancient forests, high-altitude wetlands, pastoral upland pastures and limestone cliffs.
The wildlife is remarkable: brown bears, isard chamois, bearded vultures, marmots and capercaillie inhabit the mountains, while the foothills shelter roe deer, badgers, buzzards and red kites. This biodiversity is an indicator of environmental health — and a precious asset for the respectful visitor.
Sustainable farming and short supply chains
Ariège has many farms committed to sustainable practices. HVE level 3 certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale), the organic label, and agro-ecological practices are developing across the department. Short supply chains are an everyday reality: producers' markets, direct farm sales, community-supported agriculture (AMAP).
Domaine de la Trille, in Sainte-Foi, exemplifies this approach. Florence and Benoît raise Limousin cattle on 240 hectares certified HVE level 3. Carrying the "Bienvenue à la Ferme" label, the estate practises extensive farming that respects both the animals and the environment. Conserves and prepared dishes made from their own beef are sold through direct sales, with no middleman.
HVE level 3 certification is the highest level of environmental certification for farms in France. It attests to practices that respect biodiversity, water management, fertilisation and plant protection.
Eco-responsible accommodation in Ariège
Choosing accommodation is itself an ecotourism act. Opting for a small-scale lodging that is integrated into its environment and managed by local people is already a responsible choice. Ariège offers many options: rural gîtes, farmhouse bed and breakfasts, wooden caravans, cabins.
The caravans at Domaine de la Trille are wooden accommodation units integrated within the estate's 240 hectares, offering an immersive nature experience.
Slow tourism: taking the time to discover
Ecotourism is also slow tourism: taking the time to absorb a place rather than rushing from one site to the next. Ariège is naturally suited to this. Life here moves at a slow pace, distances are short, and surprises wait around every corner.
- Favour longer stays (at least 3–4 nights) to reduce the impact of travel
- Explore the area on foot or by bike rather than by car whenever possible
- Buy your food at local markets and directly from producers
- Respect marked trails and the regulations of the Parc naturel régional
- Avoid disposable items: bring a reusable water bottle, cloth bag and containers
- Find out about protected species and the rules on foraging
Low-impact nature activities
Ariège offers a wealth of low-impact outdoor activities. Hiking, of course, is king in the Pyrénées — hundreds of kilometres of marked trails crisscross the department. Wildlife watching, landscape photography, cycling, and swimming in lakes and rivers are all activities that leave no trace in nature.
In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are ecological alternatives to downhill skiing, with far less impact on mountain ecosystems. The Chioula and Beille Nordic resorts offer quality trails in preserved landscapes.
