The city of Carcassonne is one of the most visited sites in France, and rightly so: this medieval fortress, ringed by 52 towers and 3 kilometres of ramparts, is an extraordinary monument inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. From Ariège — and in particular from Domaine de la Trille in Sainte-Foi — Carcassonne is perfectly accessible for a day trip.
How to get to Carcassonne from Ariège
From Sainte-Foi and Mirepoix, Carcassonne is about 1 hour away by the departmental roads that cross the Pays de Sault and the Aude foothills. The drive is pleasant, passing through rolling landscapes and characterful villages. You can also take the motorway via Pamiers and Castelnaudary for a slightly faster journey.
What to visit in Carcassonne?
The medieval city
The upper city is the heart of the visit. Pass through the Porte Narbonnaise and step into a remarkably well-preserved medieval world. The lices (the space between the two rings of ramparts) offer a panoramic walk. The Château Comtal, at the centre of the city, can be visited and provides a circuit along the ramparts with spectacular views of the Pyrenees on a clear day and of the lower town below.
Basilica of Saint-Nazaire
This church blends Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Its stained-glass windows are considered among the finest in the south of France. Entry is free and the visit takes around 20 minutes. Do not miss the sculpted details on the capitals and the tomb of Bishop Pierre de Rochefort.
The lower town (bastide Saint-Louis)
Less well known than the upper city, the bastide Saint-Louis is well worth a visit. Its shopping streets, covered market halls, shaded squares and the Canal du Midi that borders it offer a different atmosphere — livelier and more local. This is also where you will find the best restaurants for lunch.
Tips for a successful day out
- Arrive early in the morning (before 10 am) to enjoy the city before the crowds
- Wear comfortable shoes: the cobbled streets and ramparts are explored on foot
- Parking: car parks are available at the foot of the city (paid in season)
- Cassoulet: this is THE emblematic dish of Carcassonne. Try it at a restaurant in the lower town for more authenticity
- In summer, medieval shows and events add a festive dimension to the visit
- Off-season (autumn, winter, spring), the city is less crowded and just as beautiful
Tip: on the way back, stop in the village of Fanjeaux or Chalabre to extend your exploration of Cathar country.
On the road: stops between Ariège and Carcassonne
The route between Ariège and Carcassonne passes through historically rich territory. Cathar country straddles both departments. You can include a stop at the Château de Puivert (in Aude), which houses a Quercorb museum and offers an exceptional natural setting. The village of Chalabre and its medieval lanes are also worth a pause.
Your base in Ariège
Domaine de la Trille, in Sainte-Foi (09500), is well placed for exploring the wider region. Approximately 5 minutes from Mirepoix and about 1 hour from Carcassonne, it allows you to combine a visit to the medieval city with other excursions in Ariège: Cathar castles, prehistoric caves, charming villages.
