Visit Mirepoix in Ariège: medieval bastide, market and gastronomy

6 min read

Mirepoix is one of Ariège's jewels and the closest medieval bastide to Domaine de la Trille (5 minutes by car). Founded in 1289, this town with its regular grid plan is famous for its arcaded central square, half-timbered houses and the warm atmosphere of a southern French market town. Here is everything you need to make the most of it.

The central square: the beating heart of Mirepoix

The Place des Couverts is one of the finest medieval squares in France. Surrounded by covered galleries (the "couverts") supported by wooden pillars, it is lined with beautifully preserved half-timbered houses. The most famous, the Maison des Consuls (15th century), features a monumental carved beam depicting fantastical creatures. Cafés and restaurants fill the arcades: a magical spot for a drink on the terrace.

The Mirepoix market: a must on Mondays

The Monday morning market is the event of the week. Local producers, cheese makers, market gardeners, charcutiers, artisans... The square and surrounding streets fill with colourful stalls. It is the ideal opportunity to discover Ariège produce: goat's cheese, mountain honey, charcuterie, seasonal fruit and vegetables. There are also smaller markets on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Tip: arrive early on Mondays (before 9:30 am) to enjoy the market before the crowds. Bring local specialities back to the Domaine for a meal on your terrace!

Cathédrale Saint-Maurice

Mirepoix cathedral has the widest Gothic nave in France (21.40 metres). Its understated, elegant architecture is worth a visit. Admire the stained glass windows and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Admission is free.
