Easy Hiking in the French Pyrenees: 10 Trails in Ariège

9 min read

The Ariège Pyrenees are a hiking paradise — and not just for seasoned mountaineers. Ariège has a dense network of waymarked trails accessible to all levels, including routes perfectly suited to families, beginners and anyone who simply wants to enjoy the mountains without the suffering. Here are 10 easy hikes that showcase the best of this territory.

1. Around Lac de Montbel (1h30, flat)

Lac de Montbel, 20 minutes from Domaine de la Trille, has a 12 km trail around its shores. The terrain is flat, the path well maintained, and the views of the Pyrenees are magnificent. Accessible to all-terrain pushchairs. Swimming possible in summer at the designated beach.

2. Gorges de la Frau trail (2h, moderate ascent)

This spectacular trail runs through deep limestone gorges where light plays between the rock walls. The path follows the river and offers welcome coolness in summer. Allow 2 hours return from the car park at Fougax-et-Barrineuf. Elevation gain: around 200 m.

3. Cascade d'Ars from Aulus-les-Bains (2h30, 350 m elevation)

One of the finest waterfalls in the Pyrenees, with three successive drops totalling 110 metres. The trail climbs gradually through forest before opening out onto a spectacular panorama. The ascent is steady and suitable for children aged 6–7 and over.

4. Étang de Lers (1h, almost flat)

This mountain lake at 1,280 m altitude is surrounded by pastures and offers an idyllic setting. The loop around the lake takes about 1 hour on a flat trail. In summer you can picnic by the water and watch chamois on the surrounding slopes.

5. Montségur via the classic trail (1h30, 300 m elevation)

The climb to Montségur castle is unmissable. The trail is steep but short (30 minutes up). At the summit, the 360° view over the Pyrenees and the foothills is unforgettable. The Cathar history adds a unique dimension to the hike.

6. Pas de l'Ours trail at Bordes-Uchentein (2h, 250 m elevation)

This educational trail lets you discover brown bear territory in the Couserans. Interpretive panels line the forest route. The hike is moderate and offers beautiful views of the border peaks.

7. Chemin des Bonshommes — Montségur to Comus stage (3h, 400 m elevation)

A section of the famous GR 107, the historic path taken by the Cathars fleeing the Inquisition. The Montségur–Comus stage crosses beech forests and offers panoramas over the upper Hers valley. Longer than the others, this hike remains accessible to regular walkers.

8. Bélesta Forest — giant fir trail (1h30, flat)

Just 15 minutes from Domaine de la Trille, this forest is home to centuries-old firs reaching 50 metres tall. The waymarked trail winds between the giants, with panels explaining the forest ecosystem. Perfect for children and botany enthusiasts.

9. Lac de Bethmale (1h, flat)

This glacial lake in the Bethmale valley is surrounded by meadows and forests. The loop takes a leisurely hour. The village of Bethmale is known for its traditional clogs with curved, pointed tips — a Pyrenean cultural symbol.

10. Cap de la Dosse ridge trail (2h, 300 m elevation)

From the Col de Port (1,249 m), this ridge trail offers panoramic views across both sides of the Pyrenean chain. The ascent is gradual and the path wide. On a clear day, you can see the Ariège plain on one side and the high peaks on the other.
