Mirepoix: the medieval bastide
Mirepoix is a bastide founded in 1289, known for its arcaded square and half-timbered houses. It is a small town (around 3,000 inhabitants) with a pleasant pedestrian centre, restaurants, craft shops and a large market every Monday morning. The atmosphere is calm and tourist-friendly without being overwhelming. Mirepoix sits in the foothills, on the border between the plain and the mountains.

- Access: about 1 hour from Toulouse, about 1 hour from Carcassonne

Foix: the prefecture town
Foix is the prefecture of Ariège (around 10,000 inhabitants). Dominated by its three-towered comtal castle, it offers more services than a small bastide: shops, a cinema, varied restaurants, a covered market. Foix is closer to the Pyrenees and provides quicker access to the mountain valleys and ski resorts.
