Mirepoix is a bastide founded in 1289, known for its arcaded square and half-timbered houses. It is a small town (around 3,000 inhabitants) with a pleasant pedestrian centre, restaurants, craft shops and a large market every Monday morning. The atmosphere is calm and tourist-friendly without being overwhelming. Mirepoix sits in the foothills, on the border between the plain and the mountains.
