Where to stay near Mirepoix: gîtes and unique accommodation

10 min read

Mirepoix, the most picturesque medieval bastide in Ariège, attracts a growing number of visitors each year in search of authenticity and heritage. While the town itself offers a few B&Bs and charming hotels, the most interesting accommodation is found within a 10 to 20 km radius: character gîtes and unusual caravans set in working farms and country estates.

Why not sleep in Mirepoix itself?

Staying in the bastide has the advantage of total immersion in the medieval setting, with the possibility of strolling in the evening and early morning before day-trippers arrive. However, accommodation options are limited and high-season prices can be steep. For families, groups and those seeking space and nature, rural accommodation a few minutes from Mirepoix is often far more suitable — and less expensive.

Domaine de la Trille: caravans and gîtes 5 minutes away

Domaine de la Trille, in Sainte-Foi (09500), is just 5 minutes by car from the centre of the bastide. This 240-hectare farming estate, certified HVE level 3, offers 4 traditional caravans and 2 gîtes. Each accommodation has its own private balcony.

  • Red, Blue, Green and Yellow caravans: 2 to 4 people, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, private balcony
  • Gîte Les Roses: 60 m², bedroom + living area with kitchen, up to 4 people
  • Gîte Les Iris: 57 m², bedroom + living area with kitchen, up to 4 people
  • Rates: from 90€/night, minimum 2 nights
  • Working farm — guests can discover agricultural life
  • Pets welcome

On Monday mornings, the large Mirepoix market is just 5 minutes from the Domaine. Wake up early, shop for local produce, and come back to have breakfast on your terrace. The best of both worlds.

Other types of accommodation around Mirepoix

The range of accommodation around Mirepoix is varied. You will find B&Bs in characterful houses in Mirepoix itself or in nearby villages such as Camon (listed as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", 20 minutes away), Vals or Lagarde. These rooms offer personalised hospitality and often excellent home-cooked breakfasts. Clef Verte or Gîtes de France labelled properties offer weekly rentals in village houses or renovated farmhouses.

Camping and outdoor accommodation

For campers, several sites are set in the Hers valley and around Lake Montbel (20 minutes from Mirepoix). Campsites offer bare pitches, mobile homes and chalets for rent. It is an economical option for large families or groups. However, the level of facilities and the setting vary greatly — research thoroughly before booking.

Our tips for choosing your accommodation

  • For couples: choose a caravan with a private balcony — romantic and intimate
  • For families: gîtes of 57–60 m² with a bedroom and spacious living area are more practical than a caravan
  • For exploring the region: prioritise a central location (Sainte-Foi, Mirepoix) over isolated villages
  • For gastronomy: Mirepoix (Monday market) or accommodation near a village with a restaurant
  • With pets: check pet acceptance — Domaine de la Trille welcomes animals
  • In high season: book 2 to 3 months ahead, the best places fill up fast

How many nights to plan around Mirepoix?

The bastide of Mirepoix can be visited in half a day to a full day. But the region has so much to offer — Montségur (approximately 30 min), Niaux caves (approximately 45 min), Lake Montbel (approximately 20 min), the village of Camon (approximately 20 min), Foix castle (approximately 30 min) — that a stay of 4 to 7 nights is ideal to see everything without rushing. The minimum stay at Domaine de la Trille is 2 nights, but most of our guests stay 4 to 7 nights.
