Ariège is one of the richest departments in France for villages of character. 13th-century medieval bastides, villages perched on rocky outcrops, hamlets of slate-stone houses nestled in Pyrenean valleys: every bend in the road holds a surprise. From Domaine de la Trille in Sainte-Foi, most of these villages are reachable in under 1 hour — perfect for half-day excursions.
Camon: the Village of Roses, One of France's Most Beautiful Villages
Camon is arguably the most picturesque village in the Pays de Mirepoix. Listed under the "Plus Beaux Villages de France" label, this 10th-century fortified village is dominated by its Benedictine abbey founded in 923, whose terraced gardens overflow with rose bushes in spring. Perched on a hill above the Hers-Vif river, the village has barely a hundred inhabitants but draws thousands of visitors every year. Camon is about 20 minutes from Domaine de la Trille.
Strolling through the narrow lanes of Camon, between pink sandstone houses and medieval archways, is a genuine journey through time. The abbey (14th–16th century), now a private residence and boutique hotel, can be visited during certain events. The view from the ramparts over the valley and the Pyrenees is breathtaking.
Not to be missed: the Camon Rose Festival in May, when the hundreds of rose bushes in the village are in full bloom. An explosion of colours and fragrances in an incomparable medieval setting. Check exact dates on the Mirepoix tourist office website.
Mirepoix: Queen of the Ariège Bastides
About 5 minutes from the Domaine, Mirepoix is unmissable. Founded in 1289 by Guy de Lévis, this royal bastide is arranged around its magnificent Place des Couverts, framed by half-timbered arcades including the famous 15th-century Maison des Consuls. The Cathedral of Saint-Maurice has the widest Gothic nave in France (21.40 m) and its stained-glass windows are well worth a look. On Monday mornings, the big market brings the whole town to life.
Saint-Lizier: the Episcopal City of the Couserans
About 50 minutes from the Domaine, Saint-Lizier is one of the most remarkable towns in Ariège. A former Gallo-Roman capital, it preserves 4th-century Roman ramparts, an 11th-century Romanesque cathedral with its cloister and Byzantine frescoes listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 17th-century episcopal palace and intact medieval lanes complete the picture. The view from the village over the Couserans massif and the Pyrenees is exceptional.
Vals: Europe's Unique Troglodyte Church
About 20 minutes from Domaine de la Trille, Vals is home to one of the most unusual sites in Occitania: a church carved into rock, built on three levels into a red sandstone cliff. Dating from the 11th century, this troglodyte church is unique in Europe for its architectural design. You reach the upper level by a staircase cut into the rock to discover remarkably well-preserved medieval frescoes.

Roquefixade: the Village Beneath its Cathar Castle
About 25 minutes from the Domaine, Roquefixade is a long, narrow village at the foot of its Cathar castle perched on a rocky peak. The village itself, with its traditional stone houses, is worth exploring. The climb to the castle (15–20 min on foot) is free and open access, with a jaw-dropping panorama over Montségur and the Pyrenees.
