Ariège is not a summer-only destination. Each school holiday period offers different activities, and visitor numbers stay moderate all year round. Here is a seasonal guide to help you plan your stay.
Autumn half-term (October-November)
Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons in Ariège. The beech and oak forests turn red and gold, and the first snow appears on the Pyrenean peaks. Daytime temperatures remain mild (10-15°C) in the foothills.
- Hiking: trails are less busy and autumn colours are stunning
- Cathar castles: Montségur, Roquefixade, Foix — visit without the summer crowds
- Caves: Niaux, Labouiche, Bédeilhac — open all year or nearly so, ideal on rainy days
- Mushroom picking: a popular autumn activity in Ariège (porcini, chanterelles)
- Markets: Mirepoix market runs all year, every Monday
February holidays (winter)
February is ski season in Ariège. The resorts are about 1 hour from Mirepoix. Beyond skiing, caves and castles remain open to visitors, and the thermal baths at Ax-les-Thermes are a pleasant option for cold days.
- Alpine skiing: Monts d'Olmes (about 1 hour), Ax 3 Domaines (about 1h10)
- Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing: Plateau de Beille (about 1h15), Domaine du Chioula (about 1 hour)
- Thermal baths: Bassin des Ladres in Ax-les-Thermes (free, open all year)
- Caves: visit cavities at a constant temperature (12-14°C) — enjoyable when it is cold outside
- Sled dogs: some mushers offer outings in the Ariège Pyrenees
Easter holidays (April)
Spring arrives gradually in Ariège. The meadows are in bloom and the days grow longer. It is a good time for hiking at mid-mountain altitude (high-altitude passes may still be snow-covered). Tourist numbers are low.
- Hiking: foothill and mid-mountain trails are accessible
- Visiting bastides: Mirepoix, Camon, Saint-Lizier — lovely in spring
- Lac de Montbel: walks around the lake (swimming not yet in season)
- Farm: at Domaine de la Trille, this is calving season for the Limousin herd
- Producers' markets: spring produce arrives on the stalls
Summer holidays (July-August)
Summer is peak season, but Ariège remains far less busy than the Mediterranean coast or the Basque Country. Temperatures are warm but bearable (25-30°C in the lowlands, cooler in the mountains). All activities are open.
- Swimming: Lac de Montbel (supervised beach), rivers, water parks
- High-mountain hiking: all trails are open, including high-altitude passes
- Festivals: Médiévales de Mirepoix (July), Festival de la Marionnette (August)
- White-water sports: canyoning, kayaking, rafting in the Pyrenean valleys
- Night markets: several villages organise them in summer
- Summer toboggan and mountain biking at Domaine du Chioula
Tip: for summer holidays, book in advance. It is the only period when accommodation in Ariège can be fully booked.
Domaine de la Trille welcomes visitors all year round. Heated caravans and cottages from 90€/night.
