Ariège and Aude share the Pays Cathare and a common border in the south of Occitania. Yet these two departments offer quite different holiday experiences. One is mountainous, sparsely populated, oriented towards nature and prehistory. The other alternates between wine-growing plains, the Mediterranean coast and perched fortresses. Here is a comparison to help you choose — or combine the two.
Nature and landscapes
Ariège is a mountain department. The Ariège Pyrenees peak at over 3,000 metres (Pic de Montcalm). You will find deep forests, mountain lakes, rivers and a Regional Natural Park. The population density is one of the lowest in France, leaving vast open spaces.
Aude is more varied: from the Corbières to the Mediterranean coast, via the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenean foothills. The climate is drier and warmer, especially in summer. Landscapes alternate between vineyards, garrigue and beaches. For those who want the sea close at hand, Aude has the advantage.
Heritage and culture
Both departments share the Cathar heritage. In Ariège, you can visit Montségur (30 min from Mirepoix), Roquefixade, and the Château de Foix. In Aude, it is Carcassonne (1 hour from Mirepoix), Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, and Lastours. The Aude fortresses are often more spectacular in size; the Ariège ones are wilder and less crowded.
On the prehistoric side, Ariège is unbeatable: the Niaux cave (14,000-year-old cave paintings), the underground river of Labouiche, Bédeilhac, Mas-d'Azil, the Parc de la Préhistoire. Aude has no equivalent in this field.
In terms of medieval bastides, both departments are well endowed. Mirepoix in Ariège and Carcassonne in Aude are the respective stars. Mirepoix is more intimate, Carcassonne more monumental.

Budget and visitor numbers
Ariège remains one of the least touristy departments in France, which means moderate prices and few crowds, even in July and August. Aude, thanks to Carcassonne and the coast, attracts far more visitors — and prices follow, especially on the coast in high season. For a peaceful stay on a controlled budget, Ariège has a clear advantage.
Combining the two
From Mirepoix, you are right on the border between the two departments. Domaine de la Trille, in Sainte-Foi (09500), is 5 minutes from Mirepoix and about 1 hour from Carcassonne. You can stay in Ariège for the peace and lower prices, and make day trips into Aude (Carcassonne, Canal du Midi, Lastours). The best of both worlds.
