Catalans know their side of the Pyrenees well: the Cerdanya, the Berguedà, the Pallars. But on the other side of the border, the French Pyrenees show a different face. Ariège, a département largely unknown to Catalans, is nonetheless reachable in 3 hours from Barcelona or Girona. It is another world, within easy reach.
Cultural similarities
Ariège and Catalonia share a common history. The counties of Foix and Catalonia were linked in the Middle Ages. The Occitan language, spoken in Ariège, is a cousin of Catalan. Rural architecture is similar: stone, slate, steep roofs. Catalans feel a cultural affinity with this French region — the sense of discovery is in the details, not the fundamentals.
Two routes across
From Barcelona, you have two options. The direct route via the Puymorens tunnel (E09/N-20): fast, no toll on the French side, 3 hours. The alternative via Andorra: 15 to 30 minutes longer depending on traffic, but with the chance to stop for shopping. From Girona, allow 3h30. From Lleida, 2h30 via the Val d'Aran and Foix.
A typical weekend in Ariège
Friday evening: arrive at Domaine de la Trille, settle into your gîte or wagon. Saturday morning: hike to Lac de Montbel or visit Montségur castle. Afternoon: Mirepoix market or a cave visit (Niaux, Labouiche). Sunday: stroll across the 240-hectare estate, visit the Château de Foix, head home in the late afternoon. Over a full week, add Carcassonne, ski resorts in winter, canyoning in summer.
Domaine de la Trille is 3 hours from Barcelona and welcomes Catalan families all year round. Book your gîte or wagon for a weekend or a full week.
