Lac de Montbel is one of the largest reservoir lakes in Occitanie and without doubt the most beautiful stretch of water in Ariège. Nestled among wooded hills and meadows, with the Pyrénées as a backdrop, it offers an exceptional natural setting for swimming, hiking, water sports and fishing. Just 20 minutes by car from Domaine de la Trille, it is the must-do summer excursion.
Swimming at Lac de Montbel: the beach in Ariège
Lac de Montbel has developed beach areas with supervised swimming in summer. The water, a remarkable blue-green colour, is clean and pleasant. The sandy and grassy beaches allow families to settle in comfortably. Water temperatures are pleasant from June to September. It is a true alternative to the sea, without the traffic jams or the crowds of coastal resorts.
Swimming is supervised in July and August. Outside this period, swimming is still possible but unsupervised. Check conditions with the local town hall or tourist office.
Hiking around the lake: the 12 km loop
The trail that makes a complete circuit of Lac de Montbel is approximately 12 km long. It is an easy hike with modest elevation gain, accessible to all levels and even to families with children. The route alternates between pine forests, lake shores, meadows and panoramic viewpoints over the Pyrénées. Allow approximately 3 hours of walking for the full loop, with options to shorten the route.
The trail is particularly beautiful in spring (wildflowers, migratory birds) and autumn (blazing forest colours). In summer, the shaded sections offer welcome coolness. Bring water and a hat in summer, binoculars for birdwatching, and good footwear.
Water sports: paddle, kayak and sailing
Lac de Montbel is a prime spot for non-motorised water sports. Stand-up paddle, kayak, canoeing and sailing can all be practised in a preserved natural setting. Equipment rental providers operate on-site during the summer season. The lake, thanks to its size and regular winds, offers excellent conditions for sailing and windsurfing. For rental rates, check with the on-site providers.
Fishing at Lac de Montbel
Lac de Montbel has a strong reputation among anglers for the quality and variety of its fish: carp, pike, zander, perch, roach... The banks offer many accessible fishing spots, and boat fishing is permitted. A fishing licence is required. Check local regulations for open seasons and minimum sizes.
Observing the wildlife and flora of the lake
Lac de Montbel is a remarkable natural site for birdwatching. Grey herons, cormorants, grebes, ducks, kites and many songbirds populate the banks and surrounding woods. In winter, the lake welcomes migratory birds. Naturalists will appreciate the wetlands at the north end of the lake, particularly rich in biodiversity.
