Fishing in Ariège: Rivers, Lakes and Secret Spots in the Pyrenees

10 min read

Ariège is a fisher's land. The department is crossed by the Ariège river and its tributary the Hers-Vif, as well as dozens of streams and mountain torrents descending from the Pyrenees. Their fast, cool and well-oxygenated waters are home to remarkable populations of brown trout, grayling and dace. Add to this the Lac de Montbel, the department's largest freshwater reservoir, and the high-altitude ponds accessible to hiking anglers.

Fishing Regulations in Ariège

Before heading out to fish in Ariège, it is essential to know and comply with the regulations in force. The Ariège Fishing Federation manages fishing rights across the entire department. A fishing licence is compulsory. Day and annual licences are available; check prices on the Ariège Fishing Federation website.

Lac de Montbel: Family Fishing and Relaxation

About 20 minutes from Domaine de la Trille, Lac de Montbel is the largest body of water in Ariège (approximately 570 hectares). It is the most accessible and most popular fishing spot in the area. The artificial reservoir, created in the 1980s, is home to a fine variety of fish: zander, perch, pike, carp, roach, bream and rainbow trout. Fishing is possible all around the lake with numerous access points from the maintained banks.

Lac de Montbel is classified as Category 2 fishery. Predators (pike, zander, perch) are particularly abundant and provide great sport fishing with lures. For carp anglers, purpose-built swims allow comfortable sessions.

The Hers-Vif: the Trout River of the Pays de Mirepoix

The Hers-Vif, which flows close to Domaine de la Trille, is classified as a Category 1 fishery in its upper reaches. Brown trout, the emblematic fish of cold, fast-moving mountain water, is present in wild populations. The river offers varied stretches: calm flats, undercut bank pools and oxygenating rapids. Sections between Chalabre and Mirepoix offer interesting conditions for visiting anglers.

Fly fishing on the Hers: the river lends itself well to fly fishing, especially in the evenings when trout are rising to aquatic insect hatches. Sedge, elk hair caddis and palmer patterns work well in early summer. Observe catch-and-release rules on designated sections.

The Ariège River and its Tributaries: Big Trout

Heading south, the Ariège river offers increasingly wild and sporting fishing conditions. Between Foix and Tarascon (about 40–45 min from the Domaine), the river runs through spectacular gorges and holds large brown trout in deep pools. This stretch is better suited to experienced anglers, as bank access requires skill and wading in fast currents.

High-Altitude Ponds: Fishing and Mountains in Ariège

For hiking anglers, the high-altitude ponds of the Ariège Pyrenees are secret gems. The Étangs de Bassies (access from Auzat, about 1 h from the Domaine then about 3 h on foot) are among the most iconic: a succession of glacial lakes between 1,800 and 2,200 metres, stocked with rainbow trout. The approach hike is demanding but the scenery and the fishing make the effort more than worthwhile.

  • Étangs de Bassies (approx. 1 h from the Domaine + approx. 3 h on foot): rainbow trout in glacial water, high-mountain scenery
  • Lac d'Izourt (Vicdessos): deep glacial lake, fine trout in a wild setting
  • Étang de Lers (Massat, approx. 50 min): accessible by car, very popular, rainbow and brown trout
  • Étangs de la Haute-Ariège: numerous lakes accessible from Ax-les-Thermes

Practical Tips for Fishing in Ariège

  • Buy your fishing licence online at halieutis.fr before you leave
  • Best times: early morning (6–9 am) and late afternoon (6–9 pm) for trout
  • In summer, low-altitude rivers run low and warm: favour fishing at higher altitude
  • Spring snowmelt spates (March–April) are challenging but offer good fishing after the waters drop
  • Waders, studded boots and polarised sunglasses are essential for river fishing
  • Respect the environment: take your litter with you, return undersized fish to the water
