Mountain Biking in Ariège: Best Trails and Routes in the Pyrenees

11 min read

Ariège Pyrénées is a top-tier mountain biking destination, too often overlooked in favour of more well-known Pyrenean resorts. Yet the department has an exceptional trail network: over 500 km of marked paths, descents that delight enduro riders, panoramic loops accessible to families and mountain scenery that takes your breath away. From Domaine de la Trille in Sainte-Foi, the main MTB spots are reachable in about 20 to 60 minutes.

Domaine du Chioula: Ariège's Accessible MTB Hub

About 45 minutes from Domaine de la Trille, the Domaine du Chioula is one of the most versatile MTB spots in Ariège. Located between 1,000 and 1,700 metres altitude in the national forest, it offers a network of marked trails for all abilities, from family rides on forest tracks to technical singletrack for experienced riders. The site has a purpose-built bike park with several features and colour-coded runs.

  • Green family trails: wide forest tracks, gentle gradients, open views over the Pyrenees
  • Intermediate blue and red loops: technical sections, roots, varied terrain
  • Black enduro descents: for experienced riders, committed and fun lines
  • Wheeled summer luge run: fun for children and less sporty visitors
  • Classic and e-bike rentals on site in season

Monts d'Olmes: Bike Park and Enduro Trails

The Monts d'Olmes resort (about 55 min from the Domaine) transforms into a genuine MTB hub in summer, with lifts open to cyclists. The bike park offers well-designed descents with progressive difficulty. For experienced riders, the enduro trails from the 2,002 m summit provide long, varied and scenic descents that rank among the best in Ariège.

Mandatory equipment for the bike park: full-face helmet, knee pads and elbow pads. For Chioula and family routes, a standard MTB helmet is sufficient. Always carry water, a repair kit and a fully charged phone.

Touring MTB and Panoramic Routes

The Pays de Mirepoix Loop (30 km, easy)

Starting from Domaine de la Trille, this accessible loop winds through the hills and valleys of the Pays de Mirepoix. Tracks and quiet lanes, agricultural landscapes and views over the Pyrenees. Easy level, suitable for beginners and families on e-bikes. The route passes through Mirepoix for a coffee break under the medieval arcades.

The Hers Valley Ridge Traverse (45 km, intermediate)

A more demanding loop that follows the Hers valley up to Camon, then joins Vals via forested hills. A succession of climbs and descents on forest tracks with occasional technical passages. Around 800 m of elevation gain. Allow 4 to 5 hours for riders in good shape.

The Échappée Cathare by MTB (multi-day route)

For adventurous mountain bikers, the Échappée Cathare is a 300 km long-distance MTB route crossing the Cathar Country from the Mediterranean to the Pyrenees. Day-long sections can be ridden from Domaine de la Trille, particularly the legs between Mirepoix, Lavelanet and Montségur.

E-MTB: Explore Ariège Without the Sweat

Electric mountain bikes have transformed cycling in Ariège. They make viewpoints formerly reserved for seasoned cyclists accessible to families and couples alike. Several hire shops offer quality e-MTBs in the Mirepoix, Lavelanet and Foix area. Typical range: 40 to 80 km depending on terrain and assistance level chosen.

Where to Hire an MTB in Ariège?

  • At Domaine du Chioula: classic and e-bike hire on site
  • At Monts d'Olmes resort: bike hire often including a lift pass
  • Décathlon in Pamiers (approx. 30 min from the Domaine): wide choice, competitive prices
  • Independent hire shops in Foix and Ax-les-Thermes for high-mountain areas

Feel free to ask Florence and Benoît for their recommendations on MTB trails in the area suited to your ability level.

Safety and Good MTB Practices

  • Stay on marked trails and let someone know your route before heading out
  • Check the weather: Pyrenean storms can build quickly in summer
  • Carry at least 1.5 litres of water for a 2-hour mountain ride
  • Download an offline navigation app on your phone before you go
