The Lake Montbel loop is arguably the most accessible walk in the whole of Ariège: a nearly flat loop of about 15 kilometres alternating woodland, shoreline and peninsulas, with the Pyrenees as a backdrop. No pass to climb, no technical sections: just the largest lake in the department (570 hectares) to stroll around, on foot or by mountain bike. Twenty minutes or so from Domaine de la Trille, it's the gentle outing we recommend most often to our guests.
The Lake Montbel loop in figures
- Distance: 14.8 to 15.6 km depending on your start point (Montbel village or the Léran leisure centre)
- Elevation: very little, the trail stays between 390 and 440 m altitude
- Duration: allow 3.5 to 4 hours at a family pace
- Waymarking: yellow (PR) with sections shared with the GR 7b (white and red)
- Difficulty: easy, no technical sections
- Possible starts: Léran leisure centre or Montbel village
Where to start: Léran or Montbel?
Both starting points work well, but the Léran leisure centre is the most practical: large car park, supervised beach in summer, snack bar and equipment hire in season. It's also the right choice with children, since a swim rewards them at the finish. Starting from Montbel village, on the east side, is quieter and offers fine views over the reservoir and the Pyrenees straight away.
The route: what to expect
From the Léran shore to the wooded peninsulas
From Léran, the trail follows the shore through oak woods and clearings. The path hugs the lake's indented outline: coves, fishing pontoons and peninsulas follow one another, with the scenery changing at every bend. Most of the route is shaded — a real comfort in summer.
The dam and the south shore
Lake Montbel is an artificial reservoir created in 1985 on the waters of the Hers river: crossing the dam is one of the highlights of the loop, with an open view over the whole lake and, on a clear day, the Tabe massif and the Saint-Barthélemy peak. The wilder south shore is the best stretch for spotting herons, grebes and cormorants, all plentiful on the lake.
Short variants for families
The full loop is long for young children. Good news: the route lends itself very well to out-and-backs and partial loops.
- Peninsulas walk from Léran beach: 3 to 5 km return along the shore, all-terrain pushchair possible
- Out-and-back to the dam from Montbel: about 4 km with the finest panorama of the lake
- Turn back whenever you like: the trail follows the shore, so you simply retrace your steps when little legs get tired — impossible to get lost
The loop by mountain bike
The Lake Montbel loop also works very well by mountain bike or hybrid: wide tracks and smooth paths, about 1.5 to 2 hours of easy pedalling. It makes an excellent first family bike outing, provided you watch out for walkers on shared sections and dismount on the narrow passages.
When is the best season?
Spring and autumn offer the most beautiful light and ideal walking temperatures. In summer, set off early in the morning and finish with a swim at the supervised Léran beach (July-August). Worth knowing: Montbel is a reservoir used partly for irrigation, so its level drops naturally in late summer — the landscape changes, revealing pale marl beaches that give the lake its lagoon-like look. In winter, the loop is very pleasant in dry weather, with the snow-capped Pyrenees in the background.
Practical tips
- Carry water: no drinking water on the route outside the leisure centre
- Hat and sunscreen essential in summer, some sections are exposed
- Walking shoes or trainers with good soles: the trail can be muddy after rain
- Dogs welcome on a lead
- Free parking at the Léran leisure centre and in Montbel village
Domaine de la Trille is about twenty minutes from Lake Montbel, in Sainte-Foi, between Mirepoix and the lake. Our guests often go for the winning combo: the lake loop in the morning, lunch under the medieval arcades of Mirepoix, then a quiet late afternoon back at the farm, facing the Pyrenees.
