With its 570 hectares of turquoise water at the foot of the Pyrenees, Lake Montbel draws swimmers, anglers, walkers and paddleboarders every summer. Which leaves one practical question: where to stay? Here is our complete selection of accommodation in the area — lakeside campsites included — starting with the option we recommend for a proper holiday between the lake, Mirepoix and the Pyrenees.
Our recommendation: stay at Domaine de la Trille, 20 minutes from the lake
Domaine de la Trille, in Sainte-Foi (09500), ticks every box of the ideal base camp: a working livestock farm of 240 hectares, HVE level 3 certified, 5 minutes from the bastide town of Mirepoix and some twenty minutes from Léran beach. You sleep in one of 4 fully equipped traditional caravans (160x200 double bed, private shower room, fitted kitchenette, terrace facing the Pyrenees) or in one of 2 renovated gîtes of 57 to 60 m2, perfect for families.
What makes the difference for a Lake Montbel holiday is the location and the setting. The location: the Domaine sits at the centre of the Lake Montbel – Mirepoix – Montségur triangle, so you can alternate swimming days, markets, Cathar castles and hikes without ever repacking. The setting: Limousin cows in the meadows, total silence in the evening, a starry sky — a welcome contrast after a busy summer day at the water's edge. Free WiFi and linen provided complete the picture, from €90/night (2-night minimum).
Campsites by the lake
For die-hard fans of tents and motorhomes, the lake has two campsites with direct access and several addresses a few minutes away:
- La Régate (Léran, 3-star): next to the leisure centre, supervised beach within walking distance
- Le Fort (Montbel): above the village of Montbel, view over the water
- Domaine de la Besse (Camon, 4-star): large natural estate with pool, about 5 minutes from the lake
- La Pibola (Camon): between Mirepoix and the lake, family atmosphere
- Les Nysades (Mirepoix): the bastide town's campsite, handy for combining lake and heritage
Beware in high season: these sites fill up fast, and most close out of season (generally April to October-November).
B&Bs and rentals in the villages
The villages of Léran, Montbel and Camon — listed among the most beautiful villages in France — offer a few B&Bs and holiday rentals, and Mirepoix has the widest choice, with restaurants and shops under the medieval arcades. Capacity in the area remains limited though: in July-August, everything gets booked months ahead.
Camping or gîte by the lake: which to choose?
Camping has immediate beach access going for it. But for a week's holiday, the farm gîte or caravan quickly takes the lead: a real bed with quality bedding after active days, a fitted kitchen for cooking produce from the Mirepoix markets, the same comfort in a heatwave as on a stormy evening, and above all no neighbours in sight — your terrace looks out over meadows and the Pyrenees, not the next pitch.
And since the lake is only ever 20 minutes away, you get the best of both worlds: Léran beach when the sun shines, and a real home in the quiet countryside the rest of the time, ideally placed for day trips to Montségur, the caves or Carcassonne. That is exactly what the gîtes and caravans at Domaine de la Trille offer.
Book early for July and August
Lake Montbel has become one of the most popular summer destinations in Ariège, and the accommodation offer remains small-scale. For a stay in July-August, ideally book before spring. Out of season, the area regains a delicious calm — and the lake loop in autumn is worth the trip on its own.
