Lake Montbel, the largest body of water in Ariège with its 570 hectares, hides a concentrate of activities on its northern shore: the Léran leisure base. Treetop adventure in the forest, paddleboard and canoe rentals, a supervised beach, a restaurant, a campsite... At a single address, about 20 minutes from Domaine de la Trille, you have enough to fill a complete family day — and probably to come back for more the next day.
A leisure base on the shores of Ariège's largest lake
Created in 1985 for irrigation, Lake Montbel has become over the years the favourite aquatic playground of the Ariège locals. The Léran shore is its liveliest and most developed side: this is where the supervised beach, the boat rental providers, the adventure park, the campsite and the restaurant-bar are concentrated, in a setting of wooded hills facing the Pyrenees.
The whole site remains on a human scale: no sprawling amusement park here, but a nature base where activities follow one another on foot, between forest and shores. Parking is free and access to the site is open — you only pay for the activities you do.
The Appy Parc treetop adventure: courses from age 3
Set in the forest overlooking the lake, the Appy Parc treetop adventure course is the star attraction for families. The park lines up around sixty activities spread over several courses: 4 adult courses and 5 children's courses accessible from age 3, with zip lines, monkey bridges, swings and slides. A bungee trampoline completes the offer for the youngest.
- 4 adult courses of progressive difficulty in the trees
- 5 children's courses, accessible from age 3
- Around sixty activities: zip lines, nets, suspended bridges, slides
- Bungee trampoline for the little ones
- Shaded picnic areas and a large car park at the entrance
The park operates mainly in the summer season, every day in July-August, generally from 10am to 7pm. Expect around €20 for an adult course and from €12 for children — check prices with the park before your visit, as well as openings outside holiday periods.
On the water: paddle, canoe, pedalo and electric boats
In season, the Léran water sports base rents out everything that floats without a combustion engine: paddleboards, canoes, kayaks, pedalos and small licence-free electric boats. The lake's turquoise water, its coves and wooded islets lend themselves wonderfully to a peaceful exploration — at times you would think you were in Canada, with the Pyrenees as a backdrop.
The wind conditions, steady without being violent, also make it a good spot for learning windsurfing. And for those who prefer to stay dry, the beach supervised in July-August and its water trampoline are a stone's throw from the rental pontoons.
Fishing, walks and horse riding around the base
Lake Montbel is also a renowned fishing spot: carp, pike, zander and perch populate its waters, and several areas are accessible from the shores near the base. Riders will find bridle paths along the lake, and walkers can set off on the trail that goes around the lake — a beautiful nature loop whose route we detail in our dedicated article.
