The Ascension long weekend (in May, sometimes early June) gives you 4 days to get away. In Ariège, this is one of the best times of year: the days are long, the meadows are green, the Pyrenees are still snow-capped at altitude, and tourist numbers remain modest. Here is how to make the most of it.
Why Ariège in May
- Weather: mild days (18–25°C in the valleys), ideal for hiking and sightseeing
- Nature: meadows in bloom, trees back in leaf, rivers running high with snowmelt
- Crowds: far fewer visitors than in July–August, no need to book caves weeks in advance
- Prices: off-peak rates at most accommodation
4-day programme
Thursday: arrival and Mirepoix
Arrive at Domaine de la Trille (check-in from 4 pm). Settle in, walk around the estate. In the evening, a stroll through Mirepoix and dinner under the arcades of the bastide.
Friday: Cathar castles
Climb to Montségur castle in the morning (30 minutes by road + 30 minutes on foot). Lunch in the village. Afternoon: Roquefixade or Château de Foix depending on your energy. Return to the Domaine.
Saturday: caves and prehistory
Niaux cave in the morning (book in advance). Afternoon: Parc de la Préhistoire or underground river at Labouiche. Quiet evening at the Domaine.
Sunday: nature and departure
Walk around Lac de Montbel (20 minutes) or an easy hike in the Pyrenean foothills. Check-out at 10 am if you're leaving, or extend by a night if your schedule allows.
