In summer, the same question comes up every day: where can you swim in Ariège? The department has no sea, but it more than makes up for it with its mountain rivers, lakes and freshwater pools. The water is often cool, the setting is natural, and you avoid the crowds of Mediterranean beaches. Here are the main options.
Lac de Montbel: the beach in Ariège
This is the most accessible swimming spot from Domaine de la Trille (20 minutes). Lac de Montbel has a managed beach with supervised swimming in summer (generally from mid-June to early September). You can also practise stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and fishing. The 12 km trail around the lake is pleasant for a walk before or after a swim.
The rivers of Ariège
The Ariège, Hers, Salat and Arize rivers offer many swimming spots, often unsupervised. The water is cool because it is fed by snowmelt from the Pyrenees. A few precautions are in order: check the depth before diving in, keep an eye on the current (which can be strong after storms), and leave no litter.
Important: river swimming is at your own risk. Water can be cold and currents variable. Keep a close eye on children at all times. If in doubt, stick to supervised swimming areas.
Managed freshwater sites
- Lac de Montbel (20 min from the Domaine): supervised beach in summer, paddleboarding, kayaking
- Léran pool (15 min): small managed freshwater site, supervised swimming in summer
- Lac de Mercus (35 min): leisure base with swimming and water activities
- Mas-d'Azil pool (40 min): supervised swimming in summer
Mountain lakes
For hikers, the mountain lakes of the Ariège Pyrenees are accessible in summer. Étang de Lers, Lac de Bethmale and the lakes on the Plateau de Beille offer a mountain setting. Be aware: the water is cold (often below 15°C) and these lakes are only accessible on foot or by car via mountain roads. This is not family swimming but rather a quick dip for hikers.
Practical tips
- Bring water shoes for rivers (rocky bottom)
- Sunscreen is essential, even at the water's edge
- Mountain river water is cold: ease in gradually
- Supervised swimming areas have set hours (generally 11am-7pm in summer)
- Check water quality with the ARS (Regional Health Agency)
Domaine de la Trille is 20 minutes from Lac de Montbel. Caravans and cottages from 90€/night.
