The French Pyrenees offer a little-known yet compelling alternative to the classic rural destinations of Spain. On the French side, Ariège is the least touristy department in the Pyrenees, which means significantly lower prices, fewer crowds and genuine contact with nature and the locals.
Why the French Pyrenees rather than the Spanish side?
The French side of the Pyrenees is greener, more densely forested and less arid than the Spanish side. Ariège in particular enjoys a microclimate with temperate summers (25–30°C) that are perfect for families with children. French rural properties — gîtes — are subject to strict quality standards and offer a higher level of comfort than equivalent-range casas rurales in Spain. And crucially, Ariège is no more than 3 hours' drive from Barcelona or Zaragoza.
