Catharism left its mark on southern France in the 12th and 13th centuries, and the fortresses built or reinforced at that time dot the ridgelines of Ariège and Aude. A one-week circuit lets you visit the major sites from Montségur to Quéribus, combining history, hiking and the discovery of two departments. Here is an itinerary starting from Mirepoix.
Day 1: Montségur
Start with the most iconic site. Montségur (30 minutes from Mirepoix) was the last refuge of the Cathars before its fall in 1244. The climb takes about 30 minutes (steep path). The village museum rounds out the visit. Allow half a day.
Day 2: Roquefixade and Château de Foix
Morning: Roquefixade (25 minutes from Mirepoix). Ruins with free access, a short climb and a panorama over the Pyrenean range. Afternoon: Château de Foix (30 minutes). Three towers dominate the town. The departmental museum traces the history of the Counts of Foix and Catharism in Ariège.
Day 3: Mirepoix and rest
A quiet day. Visit the bastide of Mirepoix (arcaded square, cathedral, market if it's a Monday). In the afternoon, walk around Lac de Montbel or rest at Domaine de la Trille. Cathar castle itineraries involve a lot of walking — a rest day mid-trip is well earned.
Day 4: Puivert and Carcassonne
Head into Aude. Morning: Château de Puivert (45 minutes from Mirepoix) — among the best preserved, with its musicians' hall and intact keep. Afternoon: Carcassonne (1 hour from Mirepoix). The medieval city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest fortified ensemble in Europe. Allow 2–3 hours.
Day 5: Lastours and Minerve
Four castles on a single ridge at Lastours (1h15 from Mirepoix): Cabaret, Tour Régine, Surdespine and Quertinheux. The view from the belvedere is breathtaking. Continue to Minerve (1h30 from Mirepoix), a clifftop village listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France and a key site of Catharism.
Tip: days 5 and 6 involve longer drives (1–1h30). If you prefer to avoid the road, focus on the Ariège sites and add Carcassonne as a day trip.
Day 6: Peyrepertuse and Quéribus
The "vertigo citadels" of Aude. Peyrepertuse (about 1h30 from Mirepoix) is immense, clinging to a cliff at 800 m altitude. Quéribus (20 minutes from Peyrepertuse) was the last Cathar stronghold to fall, in 1255. Both sites require good fitness (steep climbs, no guardrails everywhere). Return to the Domaine at the end of the day.
Day 7: Usson or Vals, and departure
To finish, two nearby and lesser-known sites. The Château d'Usson (30 minutes from Mirepoix) is in ruins but the setting is beautiful. The rock-cut church at Vals (20 minutes) is built directly into the cliff face — an unusual and easy-to-access site. Departure late morning.
