Ariège is home to some of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the French Pyrenees. Unlike Alpine lakes that are often packed in summer, the Ariège lakes remain relatively untouched by mass tourism. From the lowland Lac de Montbel to high-altitude lakes such as Fourcat, there is something for every level of walker.
1. Lac de Montbel — The family walk
Lac de Montbel is a 570-hectare reservoir straddling Ariège and Aude. The full circuit is around 20 km, but several shorter loops (5 to 10 km) let you enjoy it without much effort. The trail is flat and shaded in places, perfect for families with children or leisurely walkers. Supervised swimming in summer at Léran beach. Difficulty: easy. Duration: 1h30 to 5h depending on the route. Access: 20 minutes from Domaine de la Trille.
2. Lac de Bethmale — The jewel of the Couserans
Nestled at 1,074 metres in the Bethmale valley, this lake with its deep green waters is surrounded by beech and fir forests. The loop around the lake is a short stroll (1.5 km), but the trail climbing towards the Col de la Core offers a more challenging hike with outstanding panoramic views of the Pyrenean chain. Difficulty: easy (lake loop) to moderate (Col de la Core). Duration: 30 min to 4h. Access: 1h15 from Sainte-Foi.
3. Étang de Lers — High-mountain atmosphere
Sitting at 1,275 metres at the foot of Mont Garias, the Étang de Lers offers a high-mountain feel accessible by car. The loop around the lake is easy (2 km), but hikers can continue with the climb to Pic de Garias (2,092 m), a strenuous ascent rewarded by a 360° panorama over the Ariège Pyrenees. Difficulty: easy to hard. Duration: 45 min to 5h. Access: 1h from Sainte-Foi via the Port de Lers.
4. Lac de Fourcat — For experienced hikers
Lac de Fourcat, at 2,070 metres, is a glacial lake of stark beauty. The approach from the Goulier car park (Vicdessos valley) involves a 3- to 4-hour hike with 800 metres of elevation gain. The trail crosses summer pastures and rocky terrain, offering spectacular views of the Montcalm massif. Difficulty: hard. Duration: 6 to 7h return. Access: 1h15 from Sainte-Foi.
5. Étang d'Arbu — The hidden gem
Lesser-known than its neighbours, the Étang d'Arbu (1,714 m) is a small mountain lake accessible from Aulus-les-Bains. The ascent is steady and passes through magnificent forest before opening onto a high-altitude clearing. An ideal spot for a peaceful picnic. Difficulty: moderate. Duration: 4h return. Access: 1h30 from Sainte-Foi.
6. Étang de Soulcem — The giant of upper Ariège
This large reservoir at 1,558 metres in the Vicdessos valley is impressive for its size and mineral landscape. A drivable track gives car access, but walking from the village of Auzat (3h) provides a more rewarding approach. The lakeside invites contemplation of the Montcalm massif, the highest point in Ariège (3,077 m). Difficulty: moderate. Duration: 5 to 6h return on foot.
7. Étang de Labant — Waterfall and lake
Starting from the village of Sentein in the Couserans, the hike to Étang de Labant (1,560 m) offers a varied route: dense forest, a spectacular stream waterfall, then an opening onto the lake surrounded by mountain meadows. The elevation gain is moderate and the trail is well-marked. Difficulty: moderate. Duration: 4h30 return. Access: 1h45 from Sainte-Foi.
8. Étang de Comte — Total seclusion
For those seeking absolute solitude, the Étang de Comte (2,100 m) above Aulus-les-Bains is an excellent choice. Rarely visited even in high summer, this glacial lake offers a wild and unspoilt setting. The ascent from the Cirque d'Anglade is demanding (900 m of elevation gain) but the silence up there is a reward in itself. Difficulty: hard. Duration: 6 to 7h return.
Tips: always carry plenty of water, a waterproof jacket (mountain weather changes quickly), sun cream and an IGN 1:25,000 map. At altitude, lakes are accessible from June to October depending on snow cover.
