Étang de Lers and Port de Lers: the guide to the 1,274 m site

9 min read

Perched at 1,274 metres in the heart of the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Natural Park, the Étang de Lers (sometimes spelled Lhers or Lherz) sits in a bowl of mountain pastures at the crossroads of three valleys: Massat to the north, Vicdessos to the east via the Port de Lers, and Aulus-les-Bains to the west via the Col d'Agnes. Overlooked by Mont Béas, Mont Ceint and the Pic des Trois Seigneurs (2,199 m), it is one of Ariège's most photogenic landscapes — and one of its liveliest: people fish here, walk, paraglide, and ski in winter. Here is the complete guide to the site, to combine with a discovery of the Couserans from your accommodation.

A glacial gem… and a world-famous geological site

The Étang de Lers is a lake of glacial origin surrounded by summer pastures where cows and horses graze in the warm season. The site is a Natura 2000 protected area for its rich fauna and flora. A detail for the curious: the dark rock outcropping around the lake, lherzolite, takes its name from this very place — the Étang de Lherz is its type locality, known to geologists worldwide. This rock from the Earth's mantle makes the area an open-air geology book.

What to do at the Étang de Lers?

Trout fishing

The lake is renowned for brown trout fishing, generally open from 1 May to the end of September (fishing permit required). Introductory lessons are offered in season: a lovely activity to share with children, in a setting that makes patience easy.

Walks and picnics by the water

Waymarked paths run along the lake and climb gently into the pastures: the loop around the lake is family-friendly, all-terrain pushchairs included, and picnic tables face the Pic des Trois Seigneurs. A mountain restaurant by the lake serves local specialities — handy when the weather turns.

Paragliding and free flight

The gentle slopes above the lake are a popular free-flight site: in fine weather, colourful wings take off above the water before gliding down towards the valleys. The show from the shore is worth the stop in itself.

Can you swim in the Étang de Lers?

Let's be honest: the Étang de Lers is not a swimming spot. No area is supervised, the water stays cold all year round even at the height of summer, and swimming is not recommended. If you want a proper family swimming day, head for Lake Montbel and its supervised Léran beach, much closer to Mirepoix — the Étang de Lers is best enjoyed with dry feet.

The Port de Lers: a Tour de France pass

A stone's throw from the lake, the road tips over the Port de Lers, a mountain pass at 1,517 metres between Vicdessos and Massat. It is a classic rendezvous for cyclists: the pass has featured seven times in the Tour de France since 1995, most recently in 2024. From Vicdessos, the climb is 11.5 km at an average of 7% with sections close to 11%; from Massat, allow 16.6 km at 5.2%, easier but longer. Combined with the neighbouring Col d'Agnes, it makes one of the finest cycling loops in Ariège — bikers and motorhome travellers also love this panoramic "route of the passes".

Hikes from the lake

  • The lake loop: an easy family walk along the water, ideal with young children.
  • Mont Béas: an accessible viewpoint overlooking the lake, for a half day.
  • The Pic des Trois Seigneurs (2,199 m): the big climb of the area, for trained walkers, with an immense panorama over the Couserans and the Vicdessos.
  • The neighbouring mountain lakes: the area is a renowned starting point for the high lakes of the Couserans.

Winter: a family Nordic area

When the snow settles, the site becomes a Nordic area: around 25 km of cross-country ski trails over 4 loops, 3 snowshoe routes totalling some twenty kilometres and a groomed walking path. The atmosphere is family-friendly and far quieter than the big resorts — perfect for a first time on Nordic skis or snowshoes.

Access and practical information

  • Access: via the D18, from Massat (Couserans valley), Vicdessos (over the Port de Lers) or Aulus-les-Bains (over the Col d'Agnes).
  • From Domaine de la Trille (Sainte-Foi, near Mirepoix): allow about 1 h 30 to 1 h 45 of scenic driving via Foix and the Col de Port.
  • Best season: May to October for the lake and the passes; December to March for the Nordic area, snow permitting.
  • Equipment: even in summer, pack a warm layer — at 1,274 m the wind can be brisk.
  • Food: mountain restaurant by the lake; check opening periods before driving up out of season.
