At 720 metres above sea level, where three valleys meet on the road to Andorra, Ax-les-Thermes is Ariège's most famous spa town. People have been coming since the Middle Ages for its sulphurous waters, among the hottest in the Pyrenees, but Ax is much more than its baths: a gondola up to the high mountains, the Orlu valley with its national wildlife reserve, lively lanes and café terraces make it a complete destination, summer and winter alike. Here is everything you need to know.
The hot baths: Ax's thermal experience
The beating heart of Ax-les-Thermes is its hot water. The Bains du Couloubret, a relaxation centre using natural thermal water, offers indoor and outdoor pools at 33 to 38°C: a 200 m² main pool under a glass roof, hydromassage jets, geysers and rest alcoves. Allow about two hours to make the most of it; no medical prescription is needed, and the after-ski session in winter is pure bliss. Check opening times and prices in season — it gets busy during the holidays.
Fancy a free soak? Head to Place du Breilh and its Bassin des Ladres, continuously fed by a spring at around 38°C. Built in the 13th century to treat lepers (the "ladres"), it is now freely accessible all year round: hikers ease their calves in it, and in winter visitors dip their hands while steam rises into the cold air. It is THE Ax ritual, and it costs nothing.
Ax 3 Domaines: high mountains by gondola
From the town centre, the Baou gondola climbs in about ten minutes from 720 to 1,400 metres, up to the Bonascre plateau. In winter it is the gateway to the Ax 3 Domaines ski area, a favourite with Toulouse locals. In summer the Lièvre Blanc chairlift takes over up to 2,000 metres: panoramas over the high peaks, hiking trails, downhill mountain-bike runs and an altitude playground for children. Riding a gondola straight from town without touching your car remains a rare pleasure in the Pyrenees.
The Orlu valley: marmots, chamois and the Wolf House
Ten minutes from Ax, the Orlu valley is one of the most beautiful wild glens in Ariège. The Orlu national wildlife reserve protects Pyrenean chamois, marmots and bearded vultures; the emblematic hike goes up the valley to the En Beys refuge (allow about 3.5 hours of ascent), passing the Jasse d'en Gaudu where marmots whistle. Families will prefer the Maison des Loups, a wildlife park dedicated to wolves where several packs live in semi-freedom, with commented feedings every day in season.
Strolling around Ax: market, lanes and terraces
Between two baths, Ax is best explored on foot: the narrow lanes of the old town, the banks of the Oriège and Ariège rivers, the terraces of Place du Breilh. The market is held on Tuesday and Saturday mornings all year round (with an extra market on Thursdays at the height of summer): mountain-pasture cheeses, cured meats, honey and croustade pastries. The perfect place to fill your basket before a picnic in the Orlu valley.

- Bassin des Ladres: dip your feet in 38°C water — free and fun at any age
- Maison des Loups in Orlu: commented feedings, glass observation tunnel
- Baou gondola: the cabin ride is an attraction in itself for little ones

- Croustade snack on Place du Breilh after the walk
Summer or winter: when to visit Ax?
Both seasons are worth it, for different experiences. Summer favours the mountains: hikes in the Orlu valley, mountain biking at Ax 3 Domaines, terraces and markets. Winter reverses the formula: skiing or snowshoeing by day, then the steaming Couloubret baths after dark — the hot water versus icy air contrast is unforgettable. Autumn, quieter still, offers the blazing colours of the upper Ariège valley forests without the crowds.
